Stack Windshield, Gladstone

The first stage of the refinery will produce 1.4 million tonnes of alumina per year using bauxite from Comalco’s Weipa mine in  North Queensland.

PERI successfully designed and supplied the self climbing form for the windshield for the stack to Bechtel Direct, a subsidiary of Bechtel Australia Ltd.

The wind shield stands 117m above the footing and has an outside diameter of 8.15m. The pour height was kept to 2.35m to allow the reinforcement to be prefabricated and tied to a standard mesh sheet.  A wall thickness of 500mm for the first 8 pours (19m) was followed by a taper, reducing the wall thickness to 250mm over two pours.

The taper on the inside face necessitated the use of CB platforms for the first 10 pours. At which time the ACS-R was also installed to the internal walls.

Once the ACS-R was installed, a cycle time of 24 hours was achieved with the form able to be climbed once a concrete strength of 8.8MPa was reached. A crew of only 6 men were able to strip, jump, close the forms and pour in less than 11 hours.
